Portuguese Metamorphosis: Immigrant Speech in the U.S.

Language is dynamic and changes occur all the time. Some of these transformations might surprise those who work with Portuguese as their professional focus. For example, learn the meaning of “The Shak Ess Pay Are Eih Effect”. New words adopted by Portuguese speakers migrating to this country will be the heart of this presentation.. Awareness of this phenomenon of adoption and adaptation of words will aid interpreters and translators of Portuguese. 

Expectations versus Reality in the Life of a Court Interpreter

Before immersing themselves in the daily realities of court work, beginning interpreters might be surprised to discover what often awaits them during a typical interpreting workday in court. This presentation will lift the curtains from some of the lesser known aspects of court interpreting, which are often also unknown by rookie lawyers, probation officers and even some judges without prior courtroom experience.

Vera Abreu has been a freelance translator since 1991, based in Fair Oaks, CA, specializing in telecommunications, computer localization and software testing. Originally from São Paulo, Brazil, Vera has a B.A. in English Language and Literature from PUC – São Paulo and is a former employee of Hewlett-Packard in Brazil. Former Administrator of the ATA Portuguese Language Division and former editor of the PLDATA.  

Virginia Anderson is co-owner of Canvas Dreams, a virtual network of professionals providing excellence in language and technology services. As Lead Translator, she is building a team of talented translators interested in working together to provide a more comprehensive range of services. Virginia translates French and Spanish into English and documents bilingual software development projects. Her career includes many years as a Translation Project Manager for a translation agency and as a localization consultant for a software consulting firm. Virginia has a Bachelor’s degree in French, Spanish and European Studies from Linfield College, in Oregon. She also attended language institutions in France and Costa Rica as part of her degree program.

Beatriz Bonnet sits on the ATA Board of Directors, is the official ATA representative to the ASTM Committee on translation quality standards and is also a mentor in the ATA Mentoring Program. A native of Uruguay, Beatriz has been active in the translation and interpreting fields since 1987. She is an ATA-accredited translator (English into Spanish and Spanish into English) and a Certified Federal Court Interpreter. Beatriz is also approved for conference level interpreting by the U.S. State Department. She received Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University. In addition to her translation and interpreting work, Ms. Bonnet is President and CEO of Syntes Language Group, Inc., an established language services company in the Denver Metro area.

Aida Lucia Ferreira is based in Los Angeles. A former journalist at TV Globo and TV Manchete, with experience in editing, script writing and directing, special effects, narration. Currently owns Beyond Communication, a translation company in L.A. specializing in film translation and dubbing for the Brazilian market.

Arlene Kelly, PhD is a certified court interpreter in Massachusetts. Professor with Betley College Legal and Medical Interpreting. Current Secretary of the ATA Portuguese Language Division. Dr. Kelly studied in both Portugal (Coimbra) and Spain (Madrid). PhD in History and Master’s in Latin American Studies, University of Florida at Gainesville. Field work on the Xingu River in Brazil. Fullbright Scholar with twelve years of reseatch work in Brazil.

Lucia Mary Singer, PhD, was born in Brazil and started her career as a freelance translator, specializing in the biomedical field, in 1996, following retirement from the University of São Paulo. Lucia holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology. She taught Immunology and was a researcher at the University of São Paulo (USP) for 26 years. During that period, her articles on Basic Immunology and on Immunology of Infectious Diseases were published in international medical journals and books. Most of her current freelance work is related to clinical and pre-clinical trials, papers for medical journals, educational material, MSDSs and documentation for the pharmaceutical and biomedical industry.
